The new style of fighting as advocated by Saviolo used a long dagger in the left hand (called a “Main Gauche”, which acted, like the buckler, as a parrying defence and alternative attack weapon.

Older style daggers were also still in use at this time.

The Ballock Dagger. So called because of the protuberances on the hilt. The Victorians tried to sanitise the name by calling it the “Kidney Dagger”.
Wooden hilt. Blade length 18cm (7in.)

A Rondel Dagger, which gets its name from the roundels on the hilt. They give extra strength to the user.The bottom one helps to “dag in”, the top one to “dag out”.
