Historic Scotland, who manage Hermitage Castle, wouldn’t let us run our usual display, based round the horses, in case we damaged the castle grounds(!!). Instead, Sean Barbour, our display commentator, had to give a lecture on the Reivers. It really went down well with those members of Clan Armstrong and Clan Elliot who were present when he told them that “Clan” is derived from a Gaelic word and that only the Highlands had “clans”. The Borders had “families”. It got even worse when he stated, to the many wearing tartan in some form or another, that Borderers didn’t wear tartan, that it was the garb of the savage Highlander of the North. Didn’t anyone tell him that MacGregor of MacGregor, clan chief of a real Clan would be present ?
