Perhaps the simplest (and cheapest) helmet, the ordinary Pot, dating from medieval times. Old-fashioned perhaps in the 16th Century, but still serviceable.

The Pot had the advantage that it could be worn under a hat such as the ubiquitous Scots Bonnet, in which case it was known as a "Secret".
